Finding out about Fairtrade

Students at one of the Fairtrade workshops

Students at one of the Fairtrade workshops

Over 60 young students joined us at Legislative Buildings last week for the fifth Fairtrade Primary Conference.

Sixteen of the Island’s primary schools took part in the event which saw students take a day out of the classroom to learn about all things Fairtrade.

As well as a formal conference session, the students each participated in four workshops. These included a chance to debate in the Tynwald Chamber, a look at the production of Fairtrade chocolate (including an all-important tasting!), a philosophy for children discussion on the concept of fairness and a look at all the different products now available as Fairtrade.

The event was supported by the Manx Co-operative Society, who provided items for a packed lunch, and the keynote speaker was Amy Morris from the Co-op’s Fairtrade team who talked about the benefits of Fairtrade for producers in the developing world.

President of Tynwald Steve Rodan addressed the conference and welcomed the children to the Legislative Buildings.

Towards the end of the day, the children worked in groups to come up with ideas for Fairtrade activities in their own schools during Fairtrade Fortnight which this year takes place between 27th February and 12th March.

Refutree at Ronaldsway Airport

Treev2The refugee challenge has continued throughout the year and the Manx Government has not yet agreed to welcome any Syrians here.  Our contribution to the Save The Children Festival of Trees at the Airport features a Refutree.

We would like to thank the Isle of Man Coastguard Service and the Isle of Man Yacht Club for the loan of life jackets and buoyancy aids.

Please vote for the Refutree to encourage our Government to welcome refugees here. You can also sign the on-line petition.

Sustainable Development Goals

All SDG image

Have you ever wondered whether the world is a better place now than it was 40 years ago?  Will we ever be able to tell whether international aid has been any lasting use?  The Sustainable Development Goals set targets for 2030 and there are responsibilities for those of us who live in rich countries too.

You can learn more this Saturday, 29th, by enrolling for a workshop that will be held at the new DEFA training room in the old Forestry Offices next to the One World Centre.  It starts at 10:00 and will be finished by 16:00.  Helen Dennis from London will be leading the day with input from two local retired professors: Keith Lewin and Angela Little.  There is a small charge to cover lunch and refreshment breaks – £10 for adults; £5 for students.

Please let us know you would like to come by contacting us
