Responsible Business Awards

The One World Centre’s Global Village was one of five nominees for Community Initiative of the Year for Charities at the inaugural Responsible Business Awards held last Thursday night. We didn’t win – that honour went to Beach Buddies for the amazing work they have done in both clearing the beaches and drawing in a tenth of the Island’s population to help them! – but it was a great to be part of the event.

The Chartered Management Institute generously sponsored our attendance at the evening and we were delighted to be one of two charities drawn out of a hat to benefit from funds raised on the evening.  More than £450 will make a welcome contribution to our resources.

Poetry Slam Success

DSCF6083A group of Year 8 students from Ballakermeen High School wowed the judges at the final of the One World Centre’s Poetry Slam with their poem Her Story which began by considering History = His Story.  Dylan was unable to make the final, but Graihagh, Francesca, Grace, and Ann Mary did their group proud.  The runners up, from Ramsey Grammar School – Oscar, Cian, Dylan and Owen, titled their poem You don’t know.

Sir Richard Gozney, the Lt Governor and Patron of the One World Centre, introduced the evening.  He posed a challenge to adults to recognise the poets who had written three extracts that related to different themes used in the competition.

It was widely acknowledged that the judges (Stacey Astill, Geoff Corkish and Karen Riodan, chaired by Paula Holloway) had a very difficult job.  The 12 groups in the final came from Ballakermeen, Castle Rushen, Queen Elizabeth II and Ramsey Grammar Schools, all of which had had in-school competitions involving many pupils.  As well as learning about poetry and gaining the confidence to perform, students also learned about Modern Day Slavery,  Natural Disasters, Education and Refugees, choosing how to relate these themes in poetry.

The winning team opened the Manx Lit Fest’s Poetry Slam the following evening, with Audrey Taggart being invited to perform her poem Oblivious as well.

Congratulations to all involved, and many thanks to Ballakermeen for staging the event, the judges for determining a winner, and Sir Richard for squeezing us in on his way to the airport.

Afterwards we had a lovely accolade from one of the teachers:

The experience was so valuable and worthwhile for the pupils. They got such a lot out of it – from changing their perception of poetry, building their self-confidence and exploring important world issues. It is one of the most worthwhile things I have been involved in as a teacher.

Global Village

IMG_0116 - small We were delighted to welcome Swedish dancers to the Global Village on Wednesday, complete with their own musicians. For half an hour they entertained us with a variety of group dances, elegant in their beautiful costumes. This photo was taken by Valerie Caine.
There were also performances from Lynette (Indian Dance) and Jane (Thai Dance) as well as displays of Karate and Aikido, not to mention the workshop style used by Rodger to encourage young people to try the didgeridoo.
The sun shone and the crowds enjoyed sampling food from India, Africa, the Philippines, Thailand and the Caribbean. A range of local development, environmental and cultural stalls provided activities for children. Textiles, jewelry and Fairtrade tea and coffee were available for the first time.

Shared Honours in Primary Film Competition

WinnersEarlier in the year primary school pupils were busy learning about international development so that they could create a film not more than 4 minutes long on the theme “Its Not Fair!”, interpreted in a global context. Seven films were shown at the Awards Evening on 15th May

A tale of inequality based on the story of St Bridget’s Night and narrated in Manx was one of the joint winners. Participating for the first time, the Bunscoill Ghaelgagh used the story of how St Bridget had dressed as an old beggar woman seeking shelter on a stormy night to explore attitudes to refugees, displaced people and those who lose their homes through natural disasters.  They also won an award for Best Storytelling.

Also picking up the title of Overall Winners at this year’s event was Sulby school with a film that compared the types of things that children in the Isle of Man think as unfair with the challenges faced by children in other countries such as child labour, lack of education, extreme poverty and poor water and sanitation.  Their individual award was for Best Message

Other entrants included Dhoon School who were awarded Best Acting, St Thomas’ who received Best Modelling and Animation and Arbory who won Best Design.  Bunscoill Rhumsaa picked up Best Call to Action and the youngest entrants on the night from the reception and Year 1 classes at Ballasalla were awarded Best Music.

Manx aid – Making a real difference

manxaidimageWhat does Manx international aid get spent on? Our new exhibition Making A Difference aims to explain exactly that by showing the practical work and outcomes of the many different charities and projects that have received funding from the Manx Government’s Small Grants scheme over the past five years. As well as giving details of the specific schemes that have been supported, the exhibition shows how many thousands of lives have been transformed in developing countries through Manx generosity. The exhibition is currently at the Arrivals area of the Sea Terminal in Douglas and will move in mid May to Ramsey Town Hall.  Click this link to hear OWC Committee Member Louise Whitelegg explaining the thinking behind the exhibition to Paul Moulton. http://manx.net/tv/mt-tv/watch/82641/making-a-difference-exhibition

KWC team triumphs in 10th anniversary Charity Challenge

CharityChallenge winners performing for website (1024x684)A team from King William’s College, representing the charity Excellent Development, has serenaded their way to victory in a closely fought battle at this year’s One World Charity Challenge finals.

The team, comprising of Year 12 students Harab Khan, Cameron Wheeler, Conor Taylor, Conor Moroney, Charlie McGowan and Tom Padley, were judged the overall winners for their presentation on Excellent Development’s work on sand dams. This included a rendition of a song they had composed during the fundraising stage of the competition which they performed on the night in front of the invited audience including Lieutenant Governor Sir Richard Gozney (Patron of the One World Centre) and Chief Minister Howard Quayle.

As overall winners the team was awarded £1,700 for Excellent Development and they also picked up the audience vote which gave them another £250. Joint runners-up were a team from QE2 High School representing African Promise and a second team from King Williams College representing Drop Inn Ministries. Both these teams also won £1,700 for their charities with the Drop Inn Ministries team also picking up a further £250 for most creative fundraising award.

The three remaining finalists were awarded joint fourth place and £1,200 each for their chosen charities. These were teams from Ballakermeen High School representing Powerful Information, Castle Rushen High School representing Pahar Trust and Ramsey Grammar School representing St George Foundation.

This year marked the 10th anniversary of the Charity Challenge initiative which challenges Manx students to learn about international development issues by researching a small Isle of Man or UK-based charity working overseas.

As well as learning about the wider world, students are required to develop their ICT, presentation, public speaking, time management and teamworking skills to put together a multimedia presentation on their findings. The project is unique in the British Isles and often gives participating students an added talking point in their university or job applications.
