Free screening of Kiss the Ground

The next free screening in our ‘Sustainable Futures’ film season is Kiss the Ground.

Narrated by Woody Harrelson, Kiss the Ground reveals that, by regenerating the world’s soils, we can completely and rapidly stabilise Earth’s climate, restore lost ecosystems and create abundant food supplies.

Using compelling graphics and visuals, along with striking NASA and NOAA footage, the film artfully illustrates how, by drawing down atmospheric carbon, soil is the missing piece of the climate puzzle.

The free screening will take place at the Manx Legion in Douglas, on Monday 7th June at 7pm. No advance booking is needed, please just turn up on the night.

Responsible Consumer Art Competition launched

We’re pleased to announce the launch of our new art competition on the theme Being a Responsible Consumer.

Reflecting on Sustainable Development Goal 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production), our competition asks young people and adults to think about all the stuff we buy – and how and why we might make better choices.

There are two classes of entry. Under 18s are asked to produce a poster and 18 & Over can produce any kind of artwork (provided it is easy to move and store!) The competition is open to all Isle of Man residents and the closing date is 23rd July 2021. We plan to exhibit entries later in the year.

Jumble for Jabs – a way to help provide vaccine equity

With the Isle of Man well up in the tables for most number of people vaccinated against Covid-19, we thought it was time to turn our attention to the many low income countries who are struggling to get access to the vaccines for their people.

Jumble for Jabs is an initiative to encourage people to hold jumble sales, garage sales or any other fundraising event, and donate the money raised to Go Give One, a World Health Organisation scheme to buy and deliver vaccines to poorer countries.

We’ll be holding our own Jumble for Jabs event at the Promenade Methodist Church Hall in Douglas on Saturday 5th June but we’re hoping others will take up the challenge to fundraise over the coming weeks and months. As we all know, Covid-19 knows no borders and none of us will be safe until we are all safe.

What’s your 2040? Explore more at our free screening

So it’s third time lucky we hope: we have now rescheduled our free screening of 2040 to Friday 21st May, 7.30pm at BHS Studio Theatre.

Presented in association with the Isle of Man Climate Change Coalition, 2040 was conceived by award-winning director Damon Gameau as a visual letter to his 4-year-old daughter. It explores what the future could look like if we simply embraced the best solutions already available to us to improve our planet and shifted them rapidly into the mainstream.

The screening is free to attend but please book tickets through eventbrite at https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/2040-free-screening-tickets-151487678725. Please note that tickets booked last time are not carried over and you will need to book again.

Hope to see you there!

Fill up on Fairtrade positivity

It’s been a stressful couple of weeks here on the Island with an escalating coronavirus situation. Unfortunately this has led to the events we had planned for Fairtrade Fortnight being cancelled. However, the Fairtrade Foundation has been running an online festival which you can find here. There have been lots of interesting discussions and points of view which you can catch up with “on demand” and there are also more events over this coming weekend including tonight (Friday 5th March) a virtual pub-style quiz which will guest feature Fairtrade Foundation Patron and former Apprentice and Countdown star Nick Hewer. You can register for free here. It’s important to keep the positives in life in mind right now and supporting Fairtrade is one easy way to make a positive difference to farmers and producers in vulnerable communities.

DEC Coronavirus Appeal

Did you know there are no ventilators at all in Somalia and only 4 in South Sudan and 5 in the Democratic Republic of Congo?

The DEC Coronavirus Appeal, launched earlier this year, seeks to help the most vulnerable and marginalised communities around the world – many of whom are trying to deal with Covid-19 on top of conflict, natural disaster, poverty and malnutrition.

Our Isle of Man street appeal raised over £2,000 which went directly to the DEC to support the work they are doing. Overall the appeal has now raised some £27m but it remains open as countries struggle to contain the virus. You can read regular updates from the DEC here
