So it’s third time lucky we hope: we have now rescheduled our free screening of 2040 to Friday 21st May, 7.30pm at BHS Studio Theatre.

Presented in association with the Isle of Man Climate Change Coalition, 2040 was conceived by award-winning director Damon Gameau as a visual letter to his 4-year-old daughter. It explores what the future could look like if we simply embraced the best solutions already available to us to improve our planet and shifted them rapidly into the mainstream.

The screening is free to attend but please book tickets through eventbrite at https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/2040-free-screening-tickets-151487678725. Please note that tickets booked last time are not carried over and you will need to book again.

Hope to see you there!

Fill up on Fairtrade positivity

It’s been a stressful couple of weeks here on the Island with an escalating coronavirus situation. Unfortunately this has led to the events we had planned for Fairtrade Fortnight being cancelled. However, the Fairtrade Foundation has been running an online festival which you can find here. There have been lots of interesting discussions and points of view which you can catch up with “on demand” and there are also more events over this coming weekend including tonight (Friday 5th March) a virtual pub-style quiz which will guest feature Fairtrade Foundation Patron and former Apprentice and Countdown star Nick Hewer. You can register for free here. It’s important to keep the positives in life in mind right now and supporting Fairtrade is one easy way to make a positive difference to farmers and producers in vulnerable communities.

Free screening of 2040 – Please note this event is now postponed

Blein Vie Noa – and what better way to start the New Year than to look ahead to how we’d like the world to be in the future?

We’re delighted to host, in association with the Isle of Man Climate Change Coalition, a free screening of 2040. Conceived as a visual letter to his 4-year-old daughter, this film from award-winning director Damon Gameau explores what the future could look like if we simply embraced the best solutions already available to us to improve our planet and shifted them rapidly into the mainstream.

This screening was scheduled to take place at the BHS Studio Theatre on Friday 15th January but has now been postponed because of restrictions on gatherings due to coronavirus. We will reschedule the event as soon as we can.

DEC Coronavirus Appeal

Did you know there are no ventilators at all in Somalia and only 4 in South Sudan and 5 in the Democratic Republic of Congo?

The DEC Coronavirus Appeal, launched earlier this year, seeks to help the most vulnerable and marginalised communities around the world – many of whom are trying to deal with Covid-19 on top of conflict, natural disaster, poverty and malnutrition.

Our Isle of Man street appeal raised over £2,000 which went directly to the DEC to support the work they are doing. Overall the appeal has now raised some £27m but it remains open as countries struggle to contain the virus. You can read regular updates from the DEC here

Join our Transatlantic Slave Trade guided walk around Peel

We’re offering a fantastic opportunity to join a guided walk with OWC Chair (and Blue Badge Guide!) Phil Craine around Peel to visit locations associated with the transatlantic slave trade.

Phil on a previous walk in Peel

We’ll be exploring how the Isle of Man played a crucial role in supplying cargoes, ships, captains and mariners, and we’ll also be considering slavery in the world today as well as racism on the Isle of Man.

The walk will take place on Saturday 28th November, starting at 2pm at Weatherglass Corner, Peel (corner of East Quay & Shore Road). Finish at the Cathedral by 4.30pm. This event is free of charge but please book by emailing info@owciom.org. Donations may be made if desired.

One World Week logo and image

Welcome to One World Week, a time when we reflect on global issues that affect us all and how we can make a positive difference. This year we are asking a simple question: what is one idea that would make the world a better place?

We’ve asked lots of different people, groups and organisations this question and will be sharing some of their responses on our Facebook page here. But this is a conversation for everyone so please have a think with your friends, family or work colleagues about ideas you might have to make a better world for everyone. @oneworldweekUK
