Send my Friend to School

The 2012 Send My Friend to School campaign is now in full swing for this Summer term. The aim is that 8-14 year-olds learn about the crisis in education and become active global citizens by reminding world leaders to keep to the education promises made in 2000 and provide quality primary education for every girl and boy worldwide by 2015.

The campaign this year is Olympic themed, as pupils will be learning about the Great Global Education Race 2000-2015 and will find out why some countries are on target and others are lagging behind in getting universal primary education.  Sign your school up and you will be sent a free DVD for use in class or assembly, plus posters and stickers, and there are masses of downloadable teaching resources available on-line.  Have a look

Tynwald Day

Would you like to be part of a Global Village on Tynwald Day?  This year we are holding an international dimension to Tynwald Day in the public gardens outside our offices – Garey Ny Cloie – in St Johns, opposite the sawmill in Foxdale Road.  We would love to have representation from as many community groups as possible.  You could:

* have a display of information about your country of heritage – its history, current politics, way of life, cultural objects

* devise an activity for families to help them understand more of your background

* cook food to sell

* provide music or dance – there is an outdoor stage.

Please contact me to meet up and discuss possibilities – I can come to you!

Living Below the Line

Well, it’s not been easy.  I decided to cut out all drinks apart from water and went to bed with a headache on Monday.  I guess I should have realised that I’ve become dependent on caffeine.  I wonder if the muscle aches I’ve been experiencing since are more of the same.  What a wimp!

I discovered that the tomato I was going to have half of for lunch was rotten.  I guess I should have just had the slice of bread on its own, but I added a smear of jam.

And today I’m cheating a bit too as I’m joining the Ramsey meal tonight which is being devised on £1/person, but I have had some breakfast and another slice of bread for lunch.  Perhaps I should ask for half a portion.

It has made me think.  For me, this was a choice, and it was only for 5 days.  For a quarter of the world’s population it is their daily experience – and the £1 has to stretch for everything.  If the food goes rotten, there is no money to replace it.  I’ve filled up on cold water; for many, that would be filling up with more bugs because of the poor water quality.  I’ve been doing a sedentary job; many people would be having to do hard physical labour.  Tomorrow my diet can become more varied; many folk have to cope with a very restricted choice.

Living Below the Line

Have you ever really thought what it would be like to live like a quarter of the world’s population – on £1/day?  How about actually trying it?  Kristina Crawford, the Global Poverty Ambassador on the Island, has signed up to do just that from Monday-Friday, 7-11th May.  She’s persuaded two MHKs so far, a team of students from St Ninians, and even the Director of the One World Centre to join her.  You can read an article in the local newspaper or watch an interview with Kristina and you can sign up yourself.

In Transition

Following the showing of the film In Transition 2 10 days ago, it was decided to meet again this Friday, 27th April, in the Java Lounge at 1930.  This is to give the opportunity to get to know each other a bit better, celebrate what is already happening and see what more we can do on the Island.   Do come and join us!

Funding for 2012-13

We were disappointed to learn that our Service Level Agreement with the Department of Education and Children will cease at the end of this academic year.  As work with schools is our main focus, this leaves us with the need to broaden our funding base.  At the moment we are drawing up a fundraising strategy and we would welcome ideas.  We believe that, at a time when the Island is tightening its belt, it is more important that ever to think about our relationships around the world where more than half the population is living on less than £1/day.

Last Film of the Season

In Transtion 2.0 movie coverFriday night, 13th April, sees the last of our season of films at Java Lounge, 1930.  We will be showing In Transition 2 which is an inspirational immersion in the Transition movement, gathering stories from around the world of ordinary people doing extraordinary things. You’ll hear about communities printing their own money, growing food, localising their economies and setting up community power stations. It’s an idea that has gone viral, a social experiment that is about responding to uncertain times with solutions and optimism. In a world of increasing uncertainty, here is a story of hope, ingenuity and the power of growing vegetables in unexpected places.
