Ramsey triumphant in Charity Challenge

Ramsey with Howard smallerA team from Ramsey Grammar School, representing the Pahar Trust, has clinched this year’s One World Charity Challenge competition, winning £3,500 for the charity that works to improve education and healthcare for children in Nepal.

The finals of the annual competition for the Island’s Year 12 students took place at the end of March at Babbage’s, Mountain View Innovation Centre, kindly hosted by AFD Software, the sponsors of One World Charity Challenge. This year saw all seven of the Island’s secondary and further education establishments taking part, with twenty-two teams entering overall.

Each team is tasked with researching a small charity involved in international development and developing a 10-12 minute multi-media presentation on their findings, including reference to how their particular charity meets the UN Sustainable Development Goals and the impact it has on young lives.

All the teams were able to secure some funding for their chosen charities with some £13,500 being distributed in total. This included a new prize of £1,000 for the team that was judged to have demonstrated the best advocacy for their charity. This was won by a team from King Williams College who had set up a school linking programme and undertaken other promotional work for their chosen charity Global Action Nepal.

The team from St Ninian’s High School, representing Developing Orphans, a charity working with children in Uganda, were runners up and also took the audience vote which gave them £3,000 altogether for their charity. In third place was the team from QEII who won £1,000 for Hands of Hope. Ballakermeen High School, University College Isle of Man and Castle Rushen High School each won £500 for their charities Glad’s House, Dekamile and Koru Hospital Fund respectively.

Well done to everyone who took part – we are sure you learned a lot about how charities work and how ordinary people can make a tremendous difference to the lives of others.

Catch our Island Voices exhibition before 17th March

Island Voices launch resizedWe wMS Island Voices 1ere thrilled to launch the inaugural exhibition showcasing our Island Voices – Journeys to the Isle of Man project at the Manx Museum last week. The project was inspired by the findings in the 2016 Census that we have people living on the Isle of Man from 164 countries around the world – and that doesn’t include the UK, Eire or the Isle of Man itself!

We wanted to explore what brought people to the Isle of Man, how they found it when they arrived and what has kept them here. The responses we received show that although life on the Island may be very different to where they have come from, there are many shared  MS Island Voices 2values among the participants as well as a positive approach to using their experiences to broaden their outlook on life. We were extremely lucky to have the services of photographer Milen Stankov, himself from Bulgaria, who has taken amazing portrait pictures of our participants.

We are also grateful to the Isle of Man Arts Council and Culture Vannin for their support of the project and to Manx Radio who broadcast a number of interviews with the participants late last year. The exhibition is a snapshot of the project at the current time; in the longer term we will be using the feedback we have gathered to produce an educational resource around changing populations, migration and global mobility. If you have moved to the Island from overseas and would liketo take part in the project, please get in touch.

Island Voices – Journeys to the Isle of Man is on display until 17th March.

Around 60 primary schoolchildren from around the Island joined us again for the 2018 conference where they learned about Fairtrade, how it benefits small scale farmers and producers across the world – and how working with Fairtrade helps them to support their families and communities.Students were welcomed to the event by the President of Tynwald Steve Rodan MHK and enjoyed a keynote speech from Leni and Maree of Shakti Man, who brought along lots of Fairtrade goods for the children to look at.

Then it was into a series of workshops, including a debate held in the Tynwald Chamber, and plaGeog 1nning what Fairtrade events they would like to hold in their schools during this year’s Fairtrade Fortnight.

Another great day and thanks to all involved.

Community Meal – One World Week

community meal
The theme for this year’s One World Week is Good Neighbours; my world depends on us. This has stimulated a bring and share meal to be held in Douglas this Friday, 27th October, at the Eastcliffe Resource Centre, Victoria Avenue, Douglas IM2 4AL at 19:00. Come and join us! It would be helpful to have some idea of numbers, but if we all bring one dish there will be plenty of food to share.

This is a joint initiative between the One World Centre, the Muslim Community on the Isle of Man, and the World Development Committee of Churches Alive in Man.

Oral History Project Begins

20171018_204510
At first glance, the Isle of Man may appear an homogeneous society. Scratch the surface and you’ll find that our residents were born in more than 100 countries. When few people in the UK can pinpoint the Isle of Man on a map, how have people from across the world found their way here?

Last night three members of the African community – Sikhu from Swaziland, Nana from Ghana and Bukola from Nigeria shared their stories with Judith Ley from Manx Radio.  You will be able to hear the results, beginning next month, on Manx Radio.  Next year we hope to have an exhibition which will move round Island venues.

If you’d like to share your story with us, please contact us.

Responsible Business Awards

280917-ReBA-412-414
The One World Centre’s Global Village was one of five nominees for Community Initiative of the Year for Charities at the inaugural Responsible Business Awards held last Thursday night. We didn’t win – that honour went to Beach Buddies for the amazing work they have done in both clearing the beaches and drawing in a tenth of the Island’s population to help them! – but it was a great to be part of the event.

The Chartered Management Institute generously sponsored our attendance at the evening and we were delighted to be one of two charities drawn out of a hat to benefit from funds raised on the evening.  More than £450 will make a welcome contribution to our resources.

Poetry Slam Success

DSCF6083A group of Year 8 students from Ballakermeen High School wowed the judges at the final of the One World Centre’s Poetry Slam with their poem Her Story which began by considering History = His Story.  Dylan was unable to make the final, but Graihagh, Francesca, Grace, and Ann Mary did their group proud.  The runners up, from Ramsey Grammar School – Oscar, Cian, Dylan and Owen, titled their poem You don’t know.

Sir Richard Gozney, the Lt Governor and Patron of the One World Centre, introduced the evening.  He posed a challenge to adults to recognise the poets who had written three extracts that related to different themes used in the competition.

It was widely acknowledged that the judges (Stacey Astill, Geoff Corkish and Karen Riodan, chaired by Paula Holloway) had a very difficult job.  The 12 groups in the final came from Ballakermeen, Castle Rushen, Queen Elizabeth II and Ramsey Grammar Schools, all of which had had in-school competitions involving many pupils.  As well as learning about poetry and gaining the confidence to perform, students also learned about Modern Day Slavery,  Natural Disasters, Education and Refugees, choosing how to relate these themes in poetry.

The winning team opened the Manx Lit Fest’s Poetry Slam the following evening, with Audrey Taggart being invited to perform her poem Oblivious as well.

Congratulations to all involved, and many thanks to Ballakermeen for staging the event, the judges for determining a winner, and Sir Richard for squeezing us in on his way to the airport.

Afterwards we had a lovely accolade from one of the teachers:

The experience was so valuable and worthwhile for the pupils. They got such a lot out of it – from changing their perception of poetry, building their self-confidence and exploring important world issues. It is one of the most worthwhile things I have been involved in as a teacher.
