Fairtrade Island Initiative

ftisland

Fairtrade Island!
On Monday 7th July 2008 the Isle of Man received Fairtrade Island Status. Chief Minister Tony Brown was presented with the Islands certificate from Bruce Crowther from the Fairtrade Foundation in the morning before the Tynwald Day ceremony. This is a fantastic achievement for the Island, and was made possible by the hard work of the shops, cafes, schools, churches, businesses and individuals who have supported Fairtrade! The Fairtrade Island Initiative is a group of individuals committed to promoting Fairtrade on the Isle of Man while also raising awareness of

how it works and the difference it makes. The One World Centre is an active member of this coalition group

The Island Initiative has compiled a directory of retailers, churches, businesses and community groups on the Island - but we need your help. This information changes regularly, if you know of anywhere that uses or sells Fairtrade products that isn’t mentioned in the directory below please contact us.

Fairtrade Schools

The Fairtrade Foundation recently launched a new scheme to help schools achieve Fairtrade Status. This is a really exciting move as the new scheme sets out clear goals that each school has to meet - which ensures a genuine and thorough commitment to Fairtrade.

Fairtrade schools are essential for gaining Fairtrade Island status, education is the key to understanding why in todays society there is a need for Fairtrade. The Department of Education is committed to seeing a number of individual schools working towards Fairtrade status over the next year. The One World Centre offers a wide range of Fairtrade resources that can be used in schools, and can arrange for expert speakers to run workshops on Fairtrade

To become a Fairtrade School you need to be able to say:

1. Our school has set up a Fairtrade School Steering Group (or committee). At least half of us are pupils or students and we meet together at least once a term.

2. Our school has written and adopted a whole-school Fairtrade Policy. We have the support of the board of Governors and our Policy is signed by the Headteacher.

3. Our school is committed to selling, promoting and using Fairtrade products as much as possible. If we have problems, we can at least show that we have tried and will continue trying.

4. Our whole school learns about Fairtrade In at least three subjects in each of two year groups.

5. Our school promotes and takes action for Fairtrade at least once a term in the school and once a year in the wider community. This way it becomes a regular part of what we do, and allows everyone to take part in helping to bring about a fairer world.

These goals don’t have to be followed in any particular order and remember that it will take your school a year or more to gather the evidence together.

Make a Mosaic

mam_dru

Earlier this year the One World Centre launched a community art project, Make a Mosaic.

We provided schools and community groups with 2ft x 2ft boards to create a mosaic of their own design using the Fairtrade mark. Each group had to eat and drink their way through as many Fairtrade products as possible to collect the labels for their board!
